Platelet Therapy

Active Pain Relief specializes in Platelet Therapy, a treatment that uses your blood as a natural healing agent. Using your blood platelets, this minimally invasive therapy stimulates the body’s natural healing mechanism by injecting them into the affected joints, tendons, or ligaments. This technique is an excellent alternative to surgery, offering healing benefits with fewer side effects than steroid injections and typically no downtime required. Platelet Therapy is rooted in the science of your body’s natural healing processes, utilizing plasma a vital component of your blood that contains platelets.

We treat a wide range of joint conditions, including knee ligament sprains, shoulder instability, and low back pain due to weak supporting tissue. Our team may also recommend complementary treatments like PRP therapy in Tigard or MFAT injections when additional regenerative support is needed. Each patient receives targeted care, progress tracking, and one-on-one support through the recovery process.

Unlike steroid injections that offer short-term relief, prolotherapy supports tissue regrowth for long-term joint stability. This non-surgical option is commonly used for athletes, active adults, and people recovering from injuries that haven’t responded to traditional rehab. The injections are placed in areas where ligaments or tendons are overstretched or weakened. At our Tigard clinic, each session is doctor-supervised and guided with precision. We offer flexible scheduling and follow-up care to make your recovery as smooth as possible. Patients from Tigard, Lake Oswego, and Beaverton trust us to help restore joint health without the need for invasive procedures.

How Platelet Therapy Works

Prolotherapy works by injecting a dextrose solution into areas with soft tissue damage. The solution acts as a controlled irritant, triggering your body to begin repairing injured ligaments, tendons, or joint structures. This healing response increases collagen production, which helps strengthen weak connective tissue over time. It’s a simple and natural way to promote long-term pain reduction and better joint stability.

At our Tigard clinic, prolotherapy injections are guided with ultrasound imaging to ensure precise placement in the affected tissue. This technology helps us target the exact site of pain or instability, improving the effectiveness of each injection while reducing unnecessary discomfort. Conditions like chronic back pain, shoulder instability, and tendon strain respond well to this targeted approach. When needed, we may combine prolotherapy with trigger point therapy or PRP therapy in Tigard for a more complete care plan. Most patients need a series of sessions spaced several weeks apart to support lasting results.

A typical session lasts 30 to 60 minutes. After a full evaluation, the area is cleaned and injected with the prolotherapy solution. Some people feel mild swelling or stiffness for a few days, but this fades quickly. You can usually return to daily activities right after your visit. Over time, the treated area becomes stronger, more stable, and less painful. This process supports long-term healing without the risks linked to surgery or steroid use.

Procedure Overview

Our Platelet Therapy process starts with a blood draw to extract plasma, which is then processed to isolate its platelets. These platelets are re-injected into the injured area using ultrasound imaging guidance. Upon injection, the concentrated platelets release growth factors that initiate the body’s natural healing processes. The therapy encompasses several phases: inflammation as the initial response, followed by the proliferative phase, where new tissue formation occurs over 3 to 4 weeks and typically marks the beginning of pain relief. The final phase, remodeling, involves the maturation of scar tissue, a process that can extend from 6 months up to a year.

Prolotherapy helps stabilize joints and repair soft tissue damage linked to many common pain conditions. It’s used for ligament sprains, tendon injuries, and chronic inflammation in major joints. At our Tigard clinic, we regularly use prolotherapy to treat frozen shoulder, knee instability, and lower back pain that hasn’t responded to physical therapy. This treatment also works well for athletes managing overuse injuries or recovering from tendon stress. When needed, we can combine it with options like PRP injections or MFAT therapy for broader tissue support.

Benefits of Platelet Therapy

Platelet therapy offers numerous benefits over conventional treatments:

Platelet Therapy’s benefits extend far beyond just treating symptoms; they play an invaluable role in improving overall wellness and quality of life. By utilizing your body’s own healing agents, this therapy offers an evidence based and effective approach to recovery, making it the ideal option for those looking to avoid surgery and synthetic drugs as potential sources of risk. Additionally, its straightforward nature and low risk make this procedure an accessible option for patients of all backgrounds, including those with busy lifestyles or concerns about more invasive procedures. At Active Pain Relief, Platelet Therapy provides a proven solution that supports pain relief and long-term goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is MFAT?

This is fatty tissue we take from your own body using a mini liposuction. We then process the tissue to separate the oils from the adipose before we inject in into the affected joint.

We use local anesthetic for both the injections and the liposuction to reduce discomfort, but there may be some pain associated with the procedure. You will not be sedated, so you can drive yourself home after the procedure.

Microfat (mFat) procedures utilize body fat, more commonly referred to as adipose tissue, for regenerative treatments. We conduct this procedure by making a very small incision in your lower flank where there is often abundant and readily accessible adipose tissue; then using a harvesting cannula for efficient extraction of these cells.

Adipose tissue contains mesenchymal stromal cells that are known for facilitating healing and regeneration, providing us with an effective means to boost natural repair processes in damaged or aged tissues. We utilize your own body fat as the source, to ensure compatibility and reduce rejection risk – making this method safe and efficient in supporting natural repair mechanisms in damaged or aged areas of the body.

Mesenchymal cells found within adipose tissue are autologous cells – meaning that they come directly from your own body – making them essential players in regenerative medicine due to their healing properties and incredible reparative abilities. Mesenchymal cells play a pivotal role in tendon and ligament repairs as well as cartilage protection, helping protect cartilage against further damage while expediting recovery time.

By harnessing cells harvested from your own adipose tissue in treatments, we take advantage of their natural healing capacities to promote body repair. This ensures a safer and more successful treatment outcome.

MFAT uses actual cells (platelets are not cells), unlike PRP. One reason this is important is that these cells, at times, will “donate” their mitochondria or energy-producing machinery to struggling chondrocytes. These are the cells that maintain our cartilage.

As with PRP therapy, there is typically no downtime following this procedure, allowing individuals to resume daily activities immediately following treatment. As is typical with healing response reactions such as PRP therapy, some individuals may experience temporary flare-ups of symptoms lasting 1 – 3 days as part of the healing response, after which period patients typically begin seeing improvements. Although some may opt to rest during this phase, planning extended downtime typically isn’t necessary.

Unfortunately, this treatment is not covered by insurance providers. Both mesenchymal cell therapy (formerly stem cell therapy) and PRP are considered experimental by the Food and Drug Administration and thus don’t qualify as standard covered treatments by insurers despite potential benefits and rising use in clinical practice.

If you are pregnant or have an active cancer diagnosis, you should avoid MFAT.

The risk profile of MFAT is similar to PRP. The biggest risk is infection of the injected joint or at the site of liposuction. This risk is very low.
